About South Milwaukee, WI
South Milwaukee, Wisconsin was incorporated as a village on November 8, 1892. The community grew quickly after the Bucyrus Foundry relocated from Ohio between 1891 and 1893 to be near Lake Michigan shipping routes, and the company (later Bucyrus-Erie) became a world leader in building steam shovels and mining equipment.
As the foundry’s workforce grew, so did the village, and South Milwaukee was incorporated as a city in 1897. Today it’s home to roughly 21,000 residents and sits along the shore of Lake Michigan just south of Milwaukee.
